Tips for Using This Website

ATAP Website is Speech Enabled -- BrowseAloud

What is BrowseAloud?

The ATAP website is speech enabled with the BrowseAloud plugin. BrowseAloud is free software that reads web pages out loud. It can help anyone who has difficulty reading on-line, including people with mild visual impairments, low literacy, English as a second language, or learning disabilities, such as dyslexia.

How does it work?

Once a user has downloaded BrowseAloud, the BrowseAloud icon will appear in the system tray, which is usually found in the bottom right corner of the screen.

By placing the cursor over the text, the relevant sentence will be read aloud and simultaneously highlighted. The user can choose to listen to selected sections of text or the entire page from where your cursor is pointed.

To customize your BrowseAloud settings, right click on the icon once it is installed on your computer and choose 'Open BrowseAloud settings' from the menu.

To read more about BrowseAloud, to view an online Video Tour of the service, or to read Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) which you may find useful, visit: http://www.browsealoud.com/page.asp?pg_id=80097

How do I install BrowseAloud?

You can download BrowseAloud from the BrowseAloud web site.

Hear this text - vozMe

'HEAR this text' -- When you encounter this option on the ATAP website, select the "HEAR this text' button or text link and a small pop-up window delivering the audio file will be automatically presented to you. You may also add speech to your browser for any website that you want by adding the vozMe bookmarklet. For more information, visit: vozMe. In order for vozMe to work, JavaScript must be enabled. An .mp3 file will be available to those users on the ATAP website who do not have JavaScript enabled.

Translate This Web Page (Google Translation Service)

From: To: »

Google provides a language translation service. This feature is used primarily for the NISAT web section; however, you can set it here and the entire site will be converted to the specified language by Google.

  • Skip Navigation is visible on every webpage at the very top:

Skip to... | Main content | Main menu | Section menus | Quick Links | Help

  • Select Default View - four (4) different 'views' are available. Select your default, this view will remain for one year or until you clear your cache or make a different selection. |Classic | Blue | Black (High Contrast - black/white)| Text Only (Content separated from Presentation) -- Opera, Firefox (Netscape) and Safari Browsers: Select your option, if you get a blank webpage (or redirect message), press your 'back' button and then press your 'refresh' (CTRL-R) button.
  • Set Default Font Size -- the font size that you select will remain until you change...this font-size tool is not JavaScript driven; however, it will not work if cascading style sheets are not supported. When using this tool, you may be returned to the 'home' page.
    • Note: Sorry, this font-size tool will not work if cascading style sheets are not supported.
** Internet Explorer 7+ : Users may ADJUST THE MAGNIFICATION of a window by pressing [CTRL +]; to reduce the magnification, press [CTRL -].
  • External Links ((External Link)) - Links to external websites are followed by an icon ((External Link)) to indicate that the link goes to another website.
For example: Section 508: Electronic and Information Technology
  • File Types and File Size - If a document is available in a format other than HTML, there will be a notation after the link to indicate the format as well as the file size to assist you in determining how long it may take for a larger file to download.

For example: Testimony by Diane Golden (DOC 33280 bytes)

If you require a document in a different file format than we currently provide, you can request it by contacting: Deborah Buck, Executive Director | PO Box 32 | Delmar, NY 12054 | 518.439.1263 (voice/TTY) | 518.439.3451 (fax).

    * Portable Document Format (PDF) files require Adobe Acrobat Reader software:

    * Microsoft Word (DOC) documents require a wordprocessing software that can open/read the document if you do not have the Microsoft Word software.

    * PowerPoint Presentation (PPT) files require reader software if you do not have the Microsoft PowerPoint software.

  • Scripting - AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), or Ajax, may be used for photos (e.g., photo galleries - (members only). Ajax was selected for photos because Ajax' primary characteristic is increased interactivity, speed, functionality, and usability. If scripting (JavaScript) is not supported, the user will still be able to access a larger image by clicking on it, but the image will be loaded in its own browser view, the user would then use their 'back' button to return to the webpage.
