The Assistive Technology Act (AT Act) authorizes Section 4 State and Territory Assistive Technology Act Programs.
Assistive technology is defined as any piece of equipment, device, or system used to improve or maintain the ability level of the individual with a disability in the educational setting, in employment, in transportation, and in all aspects of daily living. Assistive technology can be handmade, store brought, a modified item, or a specially designed device.
Congress successfully reauthorized the AT Act in December, 2022. The last reauthorization was in 2004. This 2022 legislation, titled, The 21st Century Assistive Technology Act, updates and modernizes the Assistive Technology Act.
